They're also one of the least safe ways to look for a rishta. That doesn't mean everyone in them is dishonest — but the structure of an open WhatsApp group makes it easy for the dishonest to operate. Here's what families should understand before joining one or sharing a biodata.

How rishta WhatsApp groups actually work

Most groups are run by an individual — sometimes a genuine matchmaker, often not. Members post biodatas and photos, and interested families reach out privately. There's usually no registration, no identity check, and no one responsible for what happens after a number is shared.

The key problem is visibility. When you post in a group, your photo, phone number and family details are instantly available to every member — and to anyone they forward them to. You have no idea who those people are, and no way to take the information back.

The real risks

1. Your photos and details get copied

Biodatas and photos from rishta groups are routinely saved and reposted elsewhere — in other groups, on social media, and on fake profiles. For women especially, a photo posted in good faith can circulate far beyond anyone's control.

2. Fake profiles and impersonation

Nothing stops someone from posting another person's photo with invented details. Impersonators use attractive photos to draw people into conversation, then move to manipulation or money requests.

3. Money scams

Common patterns include a "registration fee" to join a premium group, an advance fee to a supposed matchmaker who then disappears, or a match who develops an emergency — a medical bill, a stuck visa payment, a customs fee — after weeks of conversation. No genuine rishta requires sending money.

4. Harassment

Once your number is in a group, it's available to anyone. Many women report unwanted calls and messages from men who took their number from a rishta group and never had any intention of approaching the family properly.

5. No accountability

If something goes wrong, there's no one to report to. The group admin may not know the person, may not care, or may be part of the problem. There's no record, no verification and no moderation.

Red flags in any rishta group

• A fee to join, or to access "verified" or "premium" profiles
• An admin who promises a guaranteed rishta within a fixed time
• Profiles with only one, very polished photo
• Someone who wants to move to private chat or voice calls immediately
• Reluctance to let families speak, or to meet in person with relatives present
• Any request for money, gifts, or financial details

If you still use a group, protect yourself

• Share a biodata without your photo first; send the photo only once a family is seriously engaged
• Use a family member's number as the contact, not your own
• Never share CNIC copies, addresses or financial information
• Verify a family independently before meeting — through mutual acquaintances if possible
• Meet only in public, with family present

If something has already gone wrong

If your photos are being misused, you're being harassed, or you've lost money, don't stay silent out of embarrassment. Keep screenshots and records of numbers and messages, block and report the accounts on WhatsApp, and report the matter to the police or Pakistan's cybercrime authorities.
